A molecular assembler is a machine that is not yet developed. Based on a theory developed several decades ago by a Eric Drexler, the science laid out in the theory has never been disputed. Over the last couple of decades, the engineering which deals with the basics of chemistry and physics has been continually developed - and a working molecular assembler is expected to be completed within one or two decades. Much work has been done by another genius - Robert A. Freitas Jr. The concept is quite exciting. I believe that Mr. Drexler's and Mr. Freitas' work will be thought of some day as comparable to a Leonardo da Vinci or an Albert Einstein as far as world-changing concepts are concerned! Just what is a molecular assembler? A molecular assembler is a single molecule machine that would assemble individual atoms or molecules according to specific instructions to construct a desired product.
Biological molecules such as ribosomes fit are then molecular assemblers - because they receive instructions from mRNA (Messenger RNA) and then assemble specific sequences of amino acids to construct protein molecules. The term "molecular assembler", however, usually refers to man-made or synthetic devices.
The nanoscale size of a "molecular assembler" requires an extremely large number of such devices in order to produce a practical quantity of a desired product. However, if one were able to construct a single "molecular assembler" then it might be programmed to self-replicate or a construct copies of itself, which would occur at an exponential rate of production. Then after sufficient quantities of the molecular assemblers were available, they would then be re-programmed for production of the desired product.
Molecular assemblers could become reality as early as 2020. Many respected scientists put the high end of the fruition of this technology as 2030 or 2040 at the latest.
Molecular assemblers are thought to be highly desirable since they have been theorized to manufacture products with absolute precision and thus without any pollution. Others, however, have warned that such a powerful technology might get out of control and begin to compete with natural forms of life on earth. Of prime importance is to have open discussions of this new emerging technology among all parties concerned.
